Thousands of migrants have poured into Italy over the past week, attempting a risky and often deadly journey across the Mediterranean to seek asylum in Europe
Spring has brought a swift uptick in those making the treacherous crossing from northern Africa, but the European Union has yet to launch a comprehensive program to deal with the consistent influx of people.
Around 13,500 people have entered Italian waters just this week, as weather conditions become increasingly better and more migrants risk the journey, according to the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR. Read more...
