Motorsports: Formula E teams get their cars at new Donington facility

The nascent FIA Formula E Championship took a major step or two towards reality today when it not only opened its new headquarters, but also delivered the first batch of electric race cars to the teams that will be taking part in the inaugural season later this year.

The facility encompasses 44,000 square feet of floor space and took 14 weeks to put together. Located at Donington Park - the British racing circuit that's hosted everything from MotoGP to touring cars to Formula One - the complex will serve not only as the offices of the series organizers, but also for the ten individual teams that have signed on to the upstart electric racing series.

At the opening of the facility, those teams also each took delivery of their first Spark-Renault SRT_01E single-seat electric race car, developed by Spark Racing Technologies, McLaren, Williams, Dallara, Renault and Michelin. On hand for the festivites were the chief executives of both Formula E and Donington Park, former F1 drivers Alain Prost and Jaime Alguersuari and local government officials hailing the arrival of a new employer for over 150 people who'll make the electric racing series a reality. The first event happens in Beijing in September.
