Live video is being streamed by NBC News showing the Asiana Airlines Boeing 777-200ER aircraft that crashed as it was landing at San Francisco airport.
A video showed smoke coming from the jet on the tarmac. Passengers could be seen jumping down the inflatable emergency slides. Subsequentaerial footage shows the extent of the damage.
Flightglobal.com reports that the 2006-registered aircraft HL7742 had accumulated 35,700h on 5,185 cycles at 31 March. The 777-200ER, one of 12 in the Asiana fleet, was powered by the Pratt & Whitney PW4090 engines.
Images appear to show the aft fuselage and landing gear separated, leaving the main body of the fuselage lying about 20m (65.6ft) off the runway.
It reports that the debris field extends from the apron of the runway to the remains of the main fuselage and wings lying several hundred feet ahead of the runway numbers. Portions of the aircraft’s tail fin and horizontal stabilisers are scattered on the runway apron.
