The Tigers Have Landed:
The first two German army Unterstützungshubschrauber (UH) Tiger combat helicopters have arrived in Afghanistan. The two helicopters had their rotors and other parts removed for the An-124-100 flight from Leipzig/Halle airport to Mazar-e-Sharif.
The two others will follow Dec. 2, weather permitting.
The four helicopters are in the Afghanistan Stabilization German Army Rapid Deployment (ASGARD) configuration, with sand filters protecting their engines and Kevlar ballistic protection of the crew against rounds up to 12.7 mm. An additional eight Tigers in ASGARD configuration remain in Germany for training purposes.
The four helicopters will reach their full operating capability in the first quarter of 2013.
