Sergey Brin Takes Project Glass Out of Google’s Lab:
It’s one thing to throw up a post about a concept you’re working on. It’s quite another to take that concept out into the wild within a few days of its announcement. Sergey Brin, you sir are the future.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin was spotted by Twitter machine gun Robert Scoble at a dinner to benefit the Foundation Fighting Blindness in San Francisco wearing a prototype of the Project Glass glasses. The glasses are Google’s foray into the world of heads-up displays and augmented reality.
According to a tweet from Scoble, he was unable to convince Sergey to let him wear the prototypes: “Sergey wouldn’t let me wear the Google Glasses but I could see they were flashing info to him.” He also noted that the glasses appeared to be a self-contained unit.
The prototype Brin wore looks just like the hardware shown in the photos featured in Google’s Project Glass post this week. The UI design is evocative of the Recon HUD ski goggles, with a tiny screen on the periphery of a user’s field-of-vision. According to researchers we spoke with, this type of HUD design would not create the sort of immersive experience shown in the Project Glass video.
Google has been working on Project Glass for two years and is currently experimenting with different designs for the glasses. Google has been testing the glasses, but this would be the first time they have been spotted out in the wild.
