Nobody inspires rumors like Apple, pairing secrecy with subtle hints. And the months leading up to Wednesday’s launch of the new iPad were no different.
Speculation about what the latest iPad would feature has run rampant since late last year. How it would be shaped, What sort of hardware updates will it have? What it would be called? Now that it’s been shown, we take a look back: Who was right? Who was wrong? Who was way, way off?

Rumor: Hi-Res Display

Way back in August, the Wall Street Journal reported that the upcoming iPad would include a high-resolution Retina Display.
True or False?

True, with a 2048 x 1536 pixel count.

Rumor: Four Cores Are Better Than One

Manufacturers in Asia told Bloomberg that the iPad would include a quad-core processor.
True or False?

True, Apple’s A5x quad-core processor.

Rumor: iPad Mini

DigiTimes also cites manufacturers in claims that Apple would introduce a 7-inch iPad alongside a traditional 10-inch version.
True or False?

Bogus. But speculation continues that a 7-inch version will be released later this year.

Rumor: 4G Speeds

Verizon installed LTE equipment prior to the announcement, leading Cult of Mac to speculate that the new iPad would be 4G LTE enabled.
True or False?

True, with separate iPads for AT&T and Verizon networks.

Rumor: Siri Support

Apple Insider cited a Chinese blog, claiming the new iPad’s CPU would support Apple’s voice-activated personal assistant, Siri.
True or False?

Nope, but it does include a voice-dictation feature.

Rumor: Thin Ain’t In

Cult of Mac acquired some side-by-side photos of the iPad 2 beside the new iPad and noticed the new one was just a bit fatter.

Yes, the new iPad is 9.4 mm thick, versus the 8.8 mm iPad 2.

Rumor: An OS Refresh

When Ars Technica noticed some iPads surfing the web via an unfamiliar operating system, they guessed it was iOS 6.0, leading to speculation by others that the new iPad would bring with it a new iOS.

False for today. The new iPad runs iOS 5.1

Rumor: Quick Turnaround

Apple often releases devices shortly after their announcement, and 9 to 5 Mac found someone at an Apple store who leaked a hint about a March 16 release date for the new iPad.

True with pre-orders starting today.

Rumor: Name Game

CNET learned from an unnamed source that the new iPad would be called the “iPad HD”, contrary to other rumors that suggested “iPad 3″ or “iPad 2S.”
True or False?

Apple CEO Tim Cook never referred to the new iPad as anything but “the new iPad.”

Rumor: Surprise Surprise

More of a question really — what will be the “one more thing?”

Gadget Lab’s Mike Isaac was right; the unveiling ended without a big, final surprise. Perhaps that was Steve Jobs’ thing, and Apple is letting it rest with him.
