‘Spare One’ Phone Runs On One AA Battery

‘Spare One’ Phone Runs On One AA Battery:

$50, and runs off a single AA cell. The Spare One is perfect for emergencies

The Spare One is just that — a spare cellphone that runs on a single AA cell and does nothing more than make calls. If left switched off, it can last for up to 15 years (or the time before the battery inside decides to burst and spread its toxic innards everywhere).

Actually, it does two things: you can also use the Spare One as a flashlight.

It’s a fantastic idea, and perfect as an emergency phone even for those who don’t regularly carry any phone at all: the Spare One will make emergency calls without a SIM card inserted. For regular use, you just pop in your SIM, power on and go. If you’re using one of Energizer’s lithium AA cells, you’ll get ten hours of talk time.

The dual-band phone comes with a radio tailored to your part of the world, and will only work on GSM networks.

But what I like best is the design. The body is slim and simple, but there’s a big battery-shaped bulge right in the middle of the screen. Hilarious, and a clever way to show that it takes a single AA cell.

The Spare One will be ready for your emergency kits (or as an actual full-time phone for people like me) in March, and will sell for around $50.
