On Dec. 14, the minehunter Hr. Ms. Middelburg was retired after 25 years of service. It was the fourth Alkmaar-class minehunter retired this year. Since it entered service in 1986, it was used to clear explosives from the North Sea and Gulf of Riga, interdicted illegal refugees in the Mediterranean and, most recently, participated in Operation Unified Protector off the coast of Libya.
