An electric car billed as the most powerful on earth is about to make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s here to prove not only that the technology under the hood is possible, but that it can be absolutely exhilarating.
The Quimera All Electric GT (AEGT) supercar has three (!) electric motors putting out 700 bhp. It can do 0-62 in 3.5 seconds and, thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber, weighs just over 3,300 lbs. That’s about 1,200 lbs. heavier than the Nürburgring-busting Toyota P001 we told you about last week, but we’d certainly pay to watch them race.
Powered by lithium-polymer batteries, the AEGT is capable of a half hour on the track before needing a recharge. After watching video of the car during its shakedown, we suspect most drivers will be willing to stick around and wait until the batteries are topped up just to get a few more laps in.
If you’ve never heard of Quimera, you’re not alone. It’s not even a car company. Rather, it’s a consortium of major multinational companies, government agencies and schools, all of which have worldwide name recognition. They say they’re all working together to promote vertical integration in urban sustainability, and they’re developing scooters and sustainable power sources. But first, they’ve got to prove that electric cars can be downright badass. And that’s a business plan we can get behind.
“The AEGT is a living laboratory to test all the selected technologies,” said Alfonso Martinez, executive mechanical engineering director for Altran, the main technology provider for the AEGT project. “This first prototype has been designed in a very short time just to prove the validity of some unique design concepts and test the main performance targets of the vehicle.”
