A Luftwaffe Heron 1 unmanned aerial vehicle flew its first operational mission over Afghanistan in January using satellite data links, allowing the service to declare the system's initial operational capability on 18 February, the Bundeswehr revealed earlier this week.
Operation of the system had previously been restricted to the area around Masar-e-Sharif, where it is based. Heron 1 can now operate in "especially important operational areas" in the NATO International Security Assistance Force's Regional Command North, improving operational command and the security of soldiers deployed there, according to the Bundeswehr."
